Thai Language Reading Test

As you know, sometimes the Thai language's missing vowels can make reading quite difficult. This fact isn't forgotten on the Thais themselves, some of whom have created some incredibly confusing reading tests for native speakers. The above is just one example of this and, as you can see, it consists of very few written vowels.

While I'll provide the separated words and the translation below, try and see how much you can actually read by yourself in the image above. One issue here is that the vocabulary used is quite poetic so you might not actually know what the words mean (or where they start or end!).

Amended Text

Once you've tried this on your own, here's the same passage written with spaces between the words. Each sentence sits on a separate line to make it easier to read as well. I've also translated the text so you can see what it actually says. In the case of names, I've used the Royal Standard for Thai transliteration.

ฝน ตก ปรอย 

The rain falls lightly.

กรกนก คน ตลก ชวน ดวงกมล คน ผอม รอ ชม ภมร ดมดอม ดอกขจร 

Konkanok, the comedian, invites Duangkamon, the thin, to wait for the bee smelling the cowslip creeper.

สอง คน ชอบ จอดรถ ตรง ตรอก 

The two people like parking in the little alley.

ยอม ทน อดนอน อดกรน รอ ยล ภมร ดม ดอกหอม บน ขอน ตรง คลองมอญ 

Have patience and abstaining from sleeping and snoring. Wait for the bee smelling the fragrant flower on the log at Mon Canal.

ลม บน หวน สอบ จน ปอยผม ปรก คอ สอง

The wind blows until the locks of hair stick to their two necks. 

สมร สมพร คน จร พบ สอง อรชร 

Samon and Sompon, the wanderers, meet two ladies.

สมพร ปอง สอง สมร 

Sompon desires the two women.

ยอม ลง คลอง ลอย คอ มอง สอง อรชร
He enters the canal, floating up to his neck, and looks at the two ladies

มอง อก มอง คอ มอง ผม มอง จน สอง คน ฉงน 

He looks at their chests, their necks, their hair. He looks until they're confused.

สมพร บอก ชวน สอง คน ถอน สมอ ลง ชล 

Sompon invites the two people to draw in the anchor and sail down the canal.

ลอง สอง หน สอง อรชร ถอย หลบ สมพร วอน จน พลพรรค สดสวย หมด สน 

Try two times, the two ladies retreat to lose Sompon and plead until the beautiful friends lose interest.

กรกนก ชวน ดวงกมล ชงนมผง รอ ชม ภมร บน ดอน ตรง จอม ปลวก

Konkanok invites Duangkamon to mix powdered milk while waiting for the bee on the mound at the termite nest.

As you can see, this isn't really intended to make much sense. Rather, it's a test of the reader's ability to separate one word from the other when going over complex Thai such as this. So how did you go? Now that you know each of the words, you should have no troubles going over the passage on the projector screen above.

Vocabulary

For your information, I've listed a selection of the new vocabulary below. Remember that some of these words are quite poetic, meaning that you won't hear them too often in everyday situations.

ปรอย (bprooi): light rain
ภมร (pa-mawn): bee
ดม (dom): to smell
ขจร (ka-jorn): cowslip creeper
ตรอก (dtrawk): small alley [Smaller than a ซอย]
อด (ot): to refrain from something
กรน (gron): to snore
ขอน (kawn): log
ปอยผม (bpooi pom): lock of hair
จร (jawn): to wander
อรชร (aw-ra-chawn): slender [In the poem, it refers to slender women]
ฉงน (cha-ngon): confused
สมอ (sa-maw): anchor
วอน (wawn): to plead
พลพรรค (pawn-pak): friends, company [usually a group]
ดอน (dawn): mound
ปลวก (bpluuak): termite
