MRTA Notice, Part 2

 

In our last lesson, we looked at a notice placed by the MRTA in the motorcycle parking lot at Ladprao Station. Because of its size though, I decided to leave it until now to examine the two smaller signs that were posted alongside the larger notice. For your education and information, I've written the second half of the lesson below!

First, let's get the general meaning of the smaller sign above. As usual, I'll include the standard font, transliteration and translation below:

เรียน ผู้ใช้บริการ

riian puu-chaai-bo-ri-gaan

Attention, customers.

ลานจอดรถจักรยานยนต์

laan-jawt-rot-ja-gra-yaan-yon

The motorcycle parking area

จะปิดไม่ให้เข้าจอดทุกวันเสาร์

ja bpit maai haai kao jawt tuk wan sao

Will be closed for parking every Friday

ตั้งแต่เวลา 20.00 น. เป็นต้นไป

dtang-dtaae wee-laa 20.00 naa-li-gaa bpen-dton-bpaai

Here, I'll list the individual words that you may not know in the sign above.

เรียน (riian): attention, to inform

ลานจอดรถ (laan-jawt-rot): parking area

ตั้งแต่ (dtang-dtaae): since, from

น.(นาฬิกา / naa-li-gaa): am/pm, clock

เป็นต้นไป (bpen-dton-bpaai): from now on, onwards

เนื่องจาก (neeaung-jaak): because of, owning to, as a result of

บุคคล (buk-kon): person

ภายนอก (paai-nawk): outside

Notes on Grammar

1. The word เรียน can also mean 'to study' in both written and spoken Thai. Thus, you'll need to be aware of the context of the sentence to be able to figure out which definition is correct.
2. นาฬิกา is a very formal way of telling the time. You'll typically hear it in official announcements or see it written on schedules. The system for telling time in spoken Thai is a bit more complex and requires another post on the subject. For now, I'll just say that the above sentence ตั้งแต่เวลา 20.00 น. can be said as ตั้งแต่ 2 ทุ่ม. If you want me to explain why, please leave a comment below.
3.  เนื่องจาก connects two phrases together, forming a causal link. Here, we have the parking lot being closed as a result of people just leaving their motorbikes there without using the MRT.

Vocabulary

Here are the meanings of the more difficult words in this sign:

โปรด (bprot): please
ระวัง (ra-wang): caution
หาย (haai): to disappear, to be lost, to be stolen
บ่อย (booi): often
สน. (saw naw): police station

Notes on Grammar

1. หาย can be used in a number of situations to mean different things. On the above sign, it means that vehicles have disappeared (i.e. they were stolen) on a regular basis. Other examples of where you can use this word include คุณหายไปไหน (Where did you go?), หายเร็วๆ นะ (Get better soon.), and นาฬิกาหายแล้ว หาไม่เจอ (I've lost my watch. I can't find it.)
2. สน. is the abbreviation of สถานีตำรวจ (Lit: police station).
