News Headlines from Sanook

I'm going to try something different today. I've taken a screen shot of the Thai news website, Sanook. It's a great place to practice your Thai as you're sure to find something that interests you. As well as current events, they've also got stories about sports, health, fashion, celebrities and much more. The headlines are short for those who want quick Thai practice and you can always go and click the links to get the full story if you want something deeper.

Today, I'll look at the above screenshot, translating some of the headlines involved. I'll only focus on the five primary stories as there's too much info to go through in the one lesson.

The font's a little small so I'll rewrite each headline with transcription and translation below. We'll start with the main story in the red box.

Here is some of the new vocabulary that we can get from this:

ชัดเจน (chat-jeen): clearly, to be clear
ขวบ (kuuap): years old (generally only used when referring to young children)
ผอ. (paw aw): director (abbreviation for ผู้อำนวยการ)
สถาบันนิติวิทยาศาสตร์ (sa-taa-ban-ni-dti-wi-ta-yaa-saat): Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS)
เผย (peuy): to reveal something
สัมพันธ์ (sam-pan): to be related

ช็อก (chok): to shock someone
ระเบิด (ra-beert): bomb
ก็าซ (gaas): gas
พิษ (pit): poison
คร่า (kraa): to kill someone
ศพ (sop): corpse

หนุ่ม (num): young man
โรงงาน (rong-ngaan): factory
ล้างแค้น (laang-kaaen): to take revenge
ซุก (suk): to conceal
ยาบ้า (yaa-baa): methamphetamine
ตร. (dtaw raw): police (abbreviation for ตำรวจ)
จับ (jap): to arrest

ดม (dom): to smell, sniff
หอย (hooi): shellfish*

*ดมหอย also has a more sexual connotation in Thai. The headline plays on this for added humour.

ซดยา (sot yaa): to take medicine
คู่กับ (kuu gap): to be a couple with
เพื่อนชาย (peeuan chaai): close male friend (generally used to refer to a gay man's partner)
หนี (nii): to escape from something
โรค (rook): disease
ร้าย (raai): bad, evil
