Condo Signs, Part 1

For today, let's do a little bit of reading practice. I spotted the above sign on the entrance to my condo and thought it'd be a good start. It's not too long and hence won't scare anyone away from trying to read! You can probably guess the meaning from the picture as well, so that helps.

If you don't know how to break up this sentence into individual words, here's what it looks like with spaces:

ห้าม นำ สัตว์เลี้ยง เข้ามา ใน บริเวณ นี้

In transliterated Thai, this should read as follows. The tones are mentioned afterwards in the parentheses.

haam (falling) nam (mid) sat liiang (low, high) kao maa (falling, mid) nai (mid)
bo-ri-ween (low, high, mid) nii (high)

Here's the meaning of each Thai word in English:

ห้าม (haam): to forbid
นำ (nam): to bring
สัตว์เลี้ยง (sat liiang): pet
เข้ามา (kao maa): to enter
ใน (nai): in
บริเวณ (bo-ri-ween): area
นี้ (nii): this

So, translated into English, the above sign says "Do not bring pets into this area".

If you have any questions about this, please leave a comment below. Those who'd like to see how I've transliterated everything can read my blog post on that topic as well.

I'll be posting more signs up here later on, so make sure to return for more lessons!
