Union Mall Restaurant Notice

One of my favourite restaurants in Union Mall, รวยแซ่บ (Ruuay Saaep), recently stuck these signs to all of their tables. Since it's a short notice, I thought it'd make for another good lesson for this blog. Hopefully, this will teach you some extra words and sentence structures along the way. As well as this, I really recommend that you check this restaurant out. If you're at Pahonyothin MRT station, visit Union Mall and prepare to pamper your tastebuds.

Translation

As this is written in an odd font, I've rewritten everything in the standard way below. As usual, words have spaces between them and the transliteration is found underneath the Thai.

New Vocabulary

Here, I've taken some of the more unusual words above and translated them individually below:

ย้าย (yaai): to move/relocate
กราบ (graap): to bow down before someone
ขอบพระคุณ (kaw-pra-kun): to thank
เคารพ(kao-rop): to respect
เพียงพอ (piiang-paw): satisfactory
มิตรรักแฟนเพลง (mit-dtra-rak-faaen-pleeng): fans
สนับสนุน (sa-nap-sa-nun): to support
เนืองแน่น (neeung-naaen): crowded/packed
ทาง (taang): relating to
ทราบ (saap): to know
โฉม (choom): area/zone
ไฉไล (chai-lai): pretty/attractive
เมนู (mee-nuu): menu
แซ่บ (saaep): tasty/delicious
อาทิ (aa-ti): example
ปลาแซลมอน (bplaa-saael-mawn): salmon
ปลาดอลลี่ (bplaa-dawl-lii): dory
ชุป (chup): to coat with
แป้ง (bpaaeng): flour
ชุปแป้งทอด (chup-bpaang-tawt): fried in batter
ของหวาน (kawng-waan): dessert
มากมาย (maak-maai): many

NOTES
  1. ขอบพระคุณ is a polite version of the standard Thai way of saying thanks, ขอบคุณ.
  2. เนื่องจาก is a linking word meaning 'because of' or 'as a result of'.
  3. เดิม means 'same' in Thai. It's used when referring to things that have existed or been done for a long time. For example, the notice above mentions สถานที่เดิม which means the location they've had for a long time. You'll also see ไฉไลกว่าเดิม which means more attractive or beautiful than the place they have now.
  4. มิตรรักแฟนเพลง means 'fans' and is typically used when talking about people who like a certain radio station. As you can see, there's the word เพลง in there, meaning song. In the notice though, it's referred to in a joking manner. The writer doesn't want to be too serious, despite the very formal thanks he's given. (And I say 'he' here because the final word is ครับ which can only be used by males.)
  5. จึง this is another linking word. Since it's used in a variety of situations, it has numerous translations into English. In the above notice it links the idea of the restaurant being unsuitable for customers with the notion that they'll move it to a new setting.
  6. ทราบ is a very formal way of saying 'to know'. When speaking, say รู้ (ruu) instead.
  7. แซ่บ is the Isan (NE Thai) way of saying tasty. This has worked its way into everyday vocabulary though, even though it means the same as the Central Thai word, อร่อย (a-rooi).
  8. ปลาดอลลี่ is a mispelling of the word ปลาดอร์รี่ which comes from the John Dory fish. I've also seen this spelt as ปลาดอร์ลี่ too, as the l's and r's can get switched around frequently. Although labelled as dory, this fish is often the iridescent shark, a species of catfish native to the Mekong Region. Since both fishes are white in colour, it can be difficult to tell which is which.
  9. มากมาย is a more colourful way of saying 'many'. While the basic way is to say มาก or มากๆ, you can say มากมาย instead to make your speech more beautiful.
  10. แวะ means the simple act of stopping by somewhere for a short time. It can be used in a variety of situations.
Well, that's it for today. It's been another lengthy lesson but I hope you've picked up a lot! As usual if you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the box below.
