Bangkok Job Poster

While walking around Victory Monument in Bangkok, I noticed this poster stuck to a pillar. I thought I'd share it here since it's a good chance to learn a few different job types found in Thailand. For those actually looking for work, I'd recommend looking online instead. Those employers will be slightly more modernised!

Let's start with the title. In regular font, this is written as:

รับสมัครงาน ด่วน

Rap samak ngaan / duuan

Urgent Job Vacancies

The individual meanings for each word are below:

รับ (rap): to receive
สมัคร (samak): to apply
งาน (ngaan): work (noun)
ด่วน (duuan): urgent

As for the column headers, these translate as follows:

ตำแหน่ง (dtam-naaeng): position
จำนวน (jam-nuuan):quantity
อัตรา (at-dtraa): rate
จ้าง (jaang): to employ
อัตราจ้าง (at-dtraa jaang): wage
คุณวุฒิ (kun-na-wut): qualifications

Now we get to the actual positions. These are listed in the right-hand column.

ร.ป.ภ. (raw bpaw paw): security guard
ธุรการ (tu-ra-gaan): administration
บัญชี (ban-chii): accounts
เสมียนทั่วไป (sa-miian tuua-bpaii): general clerk
เช็คสต๊อกสโตร์ (chek sa-dtawk sa-too): stocktaker
โอเปอเรเตอร์ (oo-bpeer-ree-dteer): operator
การตลาด (gaan-dta-laat): marketing
ขับรถส่งของ (kap rot song kawng): delivery driver
พี.ซี. (pii sii): retail staff
แคชเชียร์ (kaaet-chiia): cashier
เด็กติดรถ (dek-dtit-rot): driver's assistant
แม่บ้าน (maae-baan): housekeeper
พี่เลี้ยงเด็ก (pii-liiang-dek): nanny
ดูแลผู้สูงอายุ (duu-laae puu suung aa-yu): old age carer

NOTES:

1. ร.ป.ภ. is an acronym of the phrase รักษาความปลอดภัย (lit: to look after safety)
2. The word ทัวไป means general. For example, โรคทั่วไป is a general disease.
3. Thai often uses words taken directly from English. Here, we have a few examples including เช็ค (chek), สต๊อก (sa-dtawk), สโตร์ (sa-dtaw), โอเปอเรเตอร์ (oo-bpeer-ree-dteer) and แคชเชียร์ (kaaet-chiia) meaning 'check', 'stock', 'store', 'operator' and 'cashier' respectively.
4. The acronym พี.ซี (pii sii), literally P.C., comes from the English phrase 'product consultant'.

The wages column is pretty easy to go through. Basically, it only consists of two words:

1.  ว. is short for วัน meaning 'day'. So the security guard gets paid 350 to 400 Baht per day.
2. ขึ้นไป (keun-bpai) means 'or more'. This means the admin/accounts staff gets paid 10,000 Baht or more, the stocktaker gets 9,000 Baht or more and the nanny gets 12,000 Baht or more.

We now get to the qualifications column. Again, this only contains a few words which are listed as follows:

1. ช is short for ชาย meaning 'male' and ญ is short for หญิง meaning 'female'. You can now see the sex required for each position.
2. ไม่จำกัดคุณวุฒิ means "no specific qualifications". The literal translation is 'no limit qualification'.
3. ม. is short for มัธยม which refers to specific grades/years in high school. ม.3 is grade/year 9 while ม.6 is grade/year 12 in the western school system. Therefore, a security guard doesn't need any specific qualifications, a cashier is required to have finished year 9, and a general clerk is required to have completed year 12.

Lastly, we get to the bottom section. This lists the various benefits you get when applying for work with this poster-loving company. First, I'll look at some of the more difficult words:

สวัสดิการ (sa-wat-di-gaan): employment benefit
ที่พัก (tii pak): accommodation
ประกันสังคม (bpra-gan sang-kom): social security
เบี้ยเลี้ยง (biia-liiang): allowance
เงินเบิก (ngeern beerk): overdraft
โบนัส (boo-nat): bonus

In standard Thai font, the bottom section is as follows. You should be able to figure out what the meaning is from the above.

มีสวัสดิการ อาหารที่พักฟรี ประกันสังคม เบี้ยเลี้ยง เงินเบิก โบนัส 

The last sentence and its translation are listed for your information below.

ไม่ ต้อง รอ ทราบ ผล ทันที / ลง สาขา ใกล้ บ้าน

Mai dtawng raw saap pon tan-tii / long saa-kaa glai baan
